I enjoy the rhythm of turning, the sensuousness and aliveness of the wood.
When I look at my evolution as a turner i see three states: the Bowl, the
Vessel, and Color. The Bowl correlated with my own need to have a purpose,
a reason to exist. During my bowl-turning era I turned only the trunk wood
of the tree. When I began turning vessels and goblets I worked with roots
and branches, incorporating greater awareness of the light and dark in my
existence. The Vessel refers to the possibility of existence for its own
sake, and the state of emptiness.
For me, Color is a deeper expression of Self. I use color to continue the
dance with wood, and experience it and myself in different ways. Color is a
means of reminding myself, and the viewer, of the constant change within.
The vessel, when given a new appearance or a new face through dying its
surface, allows a quiet conversation to take place. Who am I really? How
does my appearance, my attitude affect my inner being? Do they enhance the
Self, or cover it up?
Through these processes I strive to show the pureness of the wood. My
pieces are a metaphor for the essence of Being.
